Black walnut wood is very valuable for furniture and veneer. The tree
produces large nuts enclosed in a thick shell surrounded by a thick green
husk. Black walnut produces a substance that inhibits the growth of many
other species, including some ornamentals and garden vegetables. Black
walnut is a host plant for the caterpillar
of the long-tailed luna moth.
