Habitat: Prefers cool, moist, well-drained soils and full sun to part shade. Tolerates heavy shade, does not tolerate dry, hot or windy conditions. Does not tolerate pollution or salt spray.
Notes: Preferred deer browse, salt sensitive.

Eastern hemlock is native to Michigan and is commonly found in beech-maple forests. Hemlock can be used in the landscape as a lawn or specimen tree or planted in windbreaks, visual screens or in groupings for wildlife. Eastern hemlock is often damaged by deer.
