Red Maple (Acer rubrum)

Height: 40-60’

Growth Rate: moderate to rapid
Soil: sand, loam
Moisture: wet, moist
Shade Tolerance:  shade

Uses: wildlife
Spacing: minimum 10’ x 10’
Habitat: Prefers moist, acidic soils, and full sun to shade, but very adaptable. Will tolerate occasional flooding and wet soils.
Notes: Roots can cause structural damage, yellow to red fall color, salt sensitive, preferred deer browse.

Red maple is one of the first trees to change color in the fall, leaves turning yellow, orange or red. Makes a great shade tree, but surface roots can be a liability near foundations, pavement and sewer drains. Moderately browsed by deer.
