Tulip Poplar

(Yellow Poplar)

The Tulip Poplar is one of the most attractive trees and can reach a height of 200 feet. The trees have uniquely shaped leaves that alternate and are symmetrical with large greenish-yellow flowers with a bright orange spot at the base. The leaves are dark green above, pale beneath, turning clear yellow in autumn. The flowers look like tulips and appear after foliage breaks in spring and early summer. Bees make excellent honey from the flowers. The winter buds are dark red and the bark is greenish gray. The tree needs full sun, moderately moist, well drained, loose textured soils. The tree is fast growing and moderately long lived so it needs plenty of room to grow. The uses of the tree are lumber, veneer, and pulpwood, furniture, musical instruments.
