FRASER FIR (Abies fraseri) is sometimes referred to as southern balsam fir. It is an important Christmas tree in the southeastern region of the United States. A few plantings have been made in Minnesota with mixed results. Hybrids (crosses) of balsam fir and Fraser fir are currently being developed. Fraser fir has the advantage of having a later bud flushing than balsam fir. Planting trials suggest it may be more susceptible to winter injury than balsam fir. Selection and seed source are very important when planting. In addition, Fraser fir requires substantial rainfall and nutrient demand is high. |
